Scaling smallholder tree cover restoration across the tropics

چکیده

Restoring tree cover in tropical countries has the potential to benefit millions of smallholders through improvements income and environmental services. However, despite their dominant landholding shares many countries, smallholders’ role restoration not been addressed prior global or pan-tropical studies. We fill this lacuna by using spatial data on trees people, national indicators enabling conditions, micro-level expert information. find that 2050, low-cost is feasible within 280, 200, 60 million hectares croplands, pasturelands, degraded forestlands, respectively. Such could affect 210 people 59 pasturelands 22 forestlands. This predominance opportunity populated agricultural lands revealed analyses potential. In with potential, smallholdings comprise a significant proportion Asia (∼76 %) Africa (∼60 but Americas (∼3%). Thus, while account for approximately half 21st century deforestation, smallholder-based reforestation may play larger efforts reverse recent forest loss than Americas. Furthermore, our show largely lack policy commitments smallholder supportive institutional market conditions. Discussions among practitioners researchers suggest four principles – partnering farmers prioritizing preferences, reducing uncertainty, strengthening markets, mobilizing innovative financing can help scale smallholder-driven face these challenges.

Sustaining intensification of smallholder livestock systems in the tropics

Available online xxxx Smallholder livestock keepers represent almost 20% of the world population and steward most of the agricultural land in the tropics. Observed and expected increases in future demand for livestock products in developing countries provide unique opportunities for improving livelihoods and linked to that, improving stewardship of the environment. This cannot be a passive proc...

Intermediate tree cover can maximize groundwater recharge in the seasonally dry tropics

Water scarcity contributes to the poverty of around one-third of the world's people. Despite many benefits, tree planting in dry regions is often discouraged by concerns that trees reduce water availability. Yet relevant studies from the tropics are scarce, and the impacts of intermediate tree cover remain unexplored. We developed and tested an optimum tree cover theory in which groundwater rec...

Variant Scaling Relationship for Mass-Density Across Tree-Dominated Communities

The past few decades have seen a resurgence of interest in biological allometry. Specifically, a number of recent studies has suggested a –4/3 invariant scaling relationship between mass and density that is universally valid for tree-dominated communities, regardless of their phyletic affiliation or habitat. In the present study, we test this scaling relationship using a comprehensive forest bi...

Understory Cover Responses to Piñon–Juniper Treatments Across Tree Dominance Gradients in the Great Basin

Piñon (Pinus spp.) and juniper (Juniperus spp.) trees are reduced to restore native vegetation and avoid severe fires where they have expanded into sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) communities. However, what phase of tree infilling should treatments target to retain desirable understory cover and avoid weed dominance? Prescribed fire and tree felling were applied to 8–20-ha treatment plot...
